Choosing Car Repair Equipment

With the economy in the shape it is, many novice repairmen have undertaken the job of becoming a mechanic for their own car. Without the right equipment, however, the simplest repair to your car can be very daunting.

For instance, changing the oil is a simple procedure, but without the proper wrench to remove the old oil filter, the job can become more challenging than it needs to. Just as in having the right jack and lug wrench for your particular car is important in changing your tire, having the right equipment for your particular car is also vital for any repair.

Some things are simple to fix, while others are designed to be taken to a mechanic to maintain a warranty that may be in effect on your vehicle. Be sure to check your warranty papers to see if your particular repair is covered; if it is, any thing you do to fix the problem can make the warranty void (ie, even if you feel comfortable making the repair yourself, if you didn’t fix the problem, or made it worse, or it tears up again later down the road, it will no longer be covered by the warranty.)

Car Battery Charger

In just about any car battery in used in most cars now, the battery inside uses negative and positive ions to produce a chemical reaction that will then charge the car for use. Car battery chargers use electricity to charge the battery inside of your car if the energy inside of your battery is low.

Car batteries give electricity to your car because the positive and negative ions create electrochemical reactions inside of the car, and this reaction runs through a conduit or a wire to run the electricity through the car. A device is placed between the conduit to collect the energy flowing through so the car can run.

This is called DC power, or direct current power. Direct current power is exactly that, when a steady flow of energy is being used to power something, and most of all your car from your car battery.

You need to choose your car battery charger carefully. You will want to study the charger that you are purchasing, so it can maximize the car battery’s power by replacing the negative energy in the battery’s terminal. Eventually, your car battery will register as fully charged to the car battery charger. Most chargers now have an LED light that will turn green when your car battery is fully charged, and tell you if the battery is charged before you attack the charger, so you can tell if it truly is a car battery problem inside of your car that prevents it from running.

Car and Garage Equipment

Every home mechanic knows that any car issue can be fixed with a well stocked garage. A list of standard garage equipment would start with a full compliment of wrenches, sockets, and drivers. The innumerable nuts and bolts of any modern automobile would necessitate both standard and metric, as most cars now use both types. Many seasoned garage owners have learned to keep a can of spare nuts and bolts, for when just the right fastener is needed. Several screwdrivers should be added to the toolbox, both phillips and flathead.

Other equipment, such as floor jacks, creepers, and mobile lights make the car repair easier. A creeper will save clothing and muscle strain by letting the mechanic roll quickly underneath the vehicle. Floor jacks and mobile lighting will ensure that the part can be found and removed without stress. Even in daylight, or well lit garages, car parts can be installed into remote locations on the vehicle, and a bright light can come in very handy.

Advanced garage equipment would be electronic car scanners and diagnostic equipment. These devices can connect to the vehicle’s on-board computer and diagnose problems by analyzing dozens of sensors. Many times, automotive repair manuals can contain important information not available anywhere else, and no garage is complete without them.
